Saturday night, the much anticipated Teddy Riley vs. Babyface Instagram Live battle went viral for all the wrong reasons. Technical difficulties turned what was supposed to be a great quarantine concert into a meme fest.
Since quarantine started, Swizz Beats and Timbaland have orchestrated Instagram Live battles where artists put their 20 best songs against someone else. Teddy Riley and Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds received the greatest hype to date, evident by the more than 400,000 people that tuned in to Instagram Saturday night.
The original battle was postponed. At the time an explanation was not given, but news later spread that Babyface tested positive for COVID-19. Now recovering well, Babyface agreed to battle Saturday instead.
Previous Instagram battles featured artists in a room or studio with perhaps one other person present. To everyone’s surprise, Teddy Riley showed up Saturday ready for a full production with a DJ, hype man, and keyboard. Meanwhile, Babyface simply had his computer and a speaker.
Riley’s sound echoed from the beginning of the battle, which annoyed viewers, and after not being able to resolve the issue two songs in, he and Babyface agreed to reschedule the match yet again.
Monday night at 8 PM is the latest, and hopefully last, attempt for the two to finally give the people what they want. Tune into “The Rematch” on Instagram via @teddyriley1 or @babyface
