The bar and lounge, located at the heart of the property, is the latest part of the casino’s $65 million ELEVATE THE ESCAPE renovation.
The Wagner is more than a simple makeover. It shows how casinos are changing the way they welcome guests. Instead of a hidden bar between slot machines, there is now a large 4,500-square-foot lounge that feels both like an upscale cocktail spot and a lively nightlife hub. Guests can enjoy handcrafted drinks under high ceilings while staying close to the excitement of the gaming floor.
The Wagner sits at the center of the casino and offers a walk-up bar, lounge seating, and bar-top gaming stations. These features encourage guests to relax and stay awhile instead of just passing by. The space was designed to be a main meeting spot where people can gather before dinner, celebrate a win, or enjoy cocktails late into the evening.
“The Wagner is a standout destination where our guests can come together right at the center of the action,” said John Policicchio, general manager of MotorCity Casino Hotel, in a statement. “As part of ELEVATE THE ESCAPE, it reflects how we’re continuing to raise the bar while creating spaces that give guests another reason to escape to MotorCity.”
The design of The Wagner draws on Detroit’s industrial history but also feels modern and polished. Created with Ideation Design Group, the lounge mixes warm metallic finishes, dark colors, and custom woodwork with details that reference the building’s manufacturing past. The highlight is a custom bronze structure built around the original smokestack, now the main feature under a 30-foot ceiling.
The result is dramatic, offering a luxurious take on Detroit’s gritty style. Rich textures, unique lighting, and metallic details give the lounge a high-end feel while retaining MotorCity’s industrial character. This design-focused approach is becoming more common in entertainment venues, where how a place looks is just as important as what it offers.
“The Wagner was designed to feel like a natural extension of the building’s history while introducing a bold, modern identity,” said Jeffrey Teuton, director of interior design at Ideation Design Group. “It’s a space that brings together character, scale and detail in a way that creates a strong visual and social focal point within the casino.”
The Wagner’s drink menu is designed to stand out from other bars at MotorCity. The lounge serves exclusive cocktails and premium spirits you won’t find elsewhere in the casino, plus a changing list of beers, wines, and nonalcoholic cocktails. Offering high-quality alcohol-free drinks is part of a growing trend for guests who want a refined nightlife experience without alcohol.
The transformation has also significantly expanded. The new lounge is much larger than the old center bar, with seating increasing from 44 to 109 guests. This makes the space more comfortable and social, even in the busy casino setting. More improvements are coming soon, like reserved seating, dedicated cocktail servers, and special menu options to give guests a more personal experience.is only one piece of a much larger reinvention strategy.
