Former Florida gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum has been released from jail and ordered into an inpatient drug and alcohol treatment program as he faces drug charges in Alabama.

A judge ordered Gillum to remain in treatment for at least 30 days, or until he completes the program, according to TMZ. He must also wear a GPS ankle monitor and cannot leave the facility without permission.

If Gillum leaves the treatment center without authorization, the judge ordered that he be treated as an escapee and immediately arrested.

Gillum was arrested in Alabama on July 2 after police said they found methamphetamine, marijuana and drug paraphernalia in his vehicle during a traffic stop, according to NBC News. He was released the following day and entered a court-ordered drug-testing program. TMZ reported July 16 that Gillum had tested negative for drugs.

On August 6, however, he was taken back into custody after prosecutors said he missed a required drug screening.

Gillum was charged with felony methamphetamine possession and two misdemeanors: marijuana possession and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The former nominee for governor of Florida has previously been open about seeking treatment. According to Politico, he entered rehab in 2020 after discussing his struggles with alcohol and depression following his unsuccessful campaign for Florida governor.
