For the first time in nearly four years, Serena and Venus Williams are back on the doubles court together.

The tennis legends reunited Monday (August 17) at the Cincinnati Open, marking their first doubles appearance together since the 2022 U.S. Open. The highly anticipated return drew a packed crowd as fans watched tennis’ most accomplished sibling duos share the court again.

The Williams sisters ultimately fell to Marta Kostyuk and Cincinnati native Peyton Stearns, 6-2, 1-6, [10-8]. According to ESPN, the duo nearly erased a 6-0 deficit in the deciding tiebreaker, but a double fault from Venus ended their comeback attempt and their first doubles match outside a Grand Slam since the 2016 Italian Open.

Despite the loss, the sisters expressed enjoyment in playing together once again.

“I thought it was fun, I thought it was special, I thought it was good,” Serena said after the match, per the Women’s Tennis Association. “We kicked off a little rust in the middle of the match. We were starting to feel it, and it was really fun. It was really cool to be able to do this again.”

Venus added, “I think we’ve waited a long time to get back on the doubles court, even this year. Eventually, we find our way to each other. ”Serena and Venus have won 14 Grand Slam doubles titles together, along with three Olympic gold medals. They have also reached the No. 1 ranking in doubles.

The Williams sisters’ next opportunity to reunite could come at the U.S. Open, which takes place at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York from August 23 – September 13.
