Facebook announces $25 million initiative to fund Black creatives

Facebook has taken its support of Black creatives to new heights. On Aug. 5, the site announced its contribution of $25 million to encourage success in the lives of Black creators.

In a statement released via Facebook, officials stated the money’s purpose is to “equip the next generation of Black creators with the funding and resources to succeed.”

Facebook officials hope to motivate Black artists to express themselves and gain fans with the help of the money.

“We want to empower the next generation of Black storytellers to become successful. By participating in this initiative, creators receive the support they need to help them propel their careers to the next level, grow their community of followers, and build a business across Facebook Inc’s family of apps.”

Applicants must follow set guidelines to be considered eligible for the monetary gift. Creators must be United States residents and have at least 10,000 followers on either Facebook or its subsidiary application, Instagram. The set age requirement is a minimum of 18-years-old.

Applicants are asked to heed the following information on the announcement.

“Please note that applying does not guarantee admission to the program — all applicants will go through a selection process. Selected creators will receive content funding and access to education and development, product support, and community building resources.”

Facebook has created other projects to support communities of color and has invested over $1 billion in Black-owned businesses. They have also designed forums specifically to provide African-Americans with resources for a favorable outcome.
