It’s “last call” for Detroit Public School students to nominate their favorite teacher for the sixth annual Old Newsboys’ Goodfellow Fund of Detroit’s Goodfellow Teacher of the Year contest! The deadline for entries is this Friday, May 29. Nomination forms are available online at the Detroit Goodfellows web site, www.detroitgoodfellows.org.
Detroit Goodfellows sponsors the contest to show its sincere appreciation and gratitude to Detroit Public School administrators, teachers and support staff who, each year, work so diligently to identify students in need of its holiday gift packages. The 101-year-old charity’s mission is to ensure there is “No Kiddie Without a Christmas.”
Students in grades 3 through 8 at a Detroit Public School can nominate their favorite teacher for the Goodfellow Teacher of the Year recognition by answering the question: “Why is your teacher so special?” in 50 words or less.
The winning “Favorite Teacher” will receive a $200 gift card to purchase supplies for his or her classroom and a commemorative plaque. The winning teacher will also be acknowledged at the Detroit Goodfellows Annual Tribute Breakfast this fall. Additionally, the winning student will receive a Barnes and Noble gift card, a plaque, and special candy treat for his or her classroom courtesy of the Detroit Goodfellows.
Nomination forms are available online at the Detroit Goodfellows web site, www.detroitgoodfellows.org. Entries may be returned to this website or may be returned by mail to the Detroit Goodfellows PO Box 44444, Detroit, MI 48244. All nominations must be received no later than May 29, 2015.
The Goodfellows Board of Directors will review all nominations and will select a winning teacher by June 1, 2015. The winner and nominating student will receive “surprise notification” at a school assembly in early June.
Last year’s winner of the fifth annual Goodfellow Teacher of the Year contest was Elizabeth Kolesar, a fifth grade math teacher at Bennett Elementary School, in Detroit. Kolesar had been at the school for two years and with Detroit Public Schools for 15 years. The winning nomination came from 11-year-old fifth-grader, Isabella Mouat.
Founded in 1914, the Detroit Goodfellows is the original and oldest Goodfellow organization and is not affiliated with any other Goodfellow group. It also sponsors an emergency dental program for children, awards scholarships through Wayne State University, provides free shoes to children in need and helps send hundreds of needy children to camp each summer.
