Each year the Michigan Chronicle recognizes 40 emerging leaders under the age of 40. These are individuals creating a movement within in their professional lives and communities. They are a part of the next generation of leadership that inspires others through their talent and early accomplishments.
On November 4, David Woods, founder of Enjoy Detroit, will receive the inaugural community spirit trailblazer award at the Michigan Chronicle’s 40 Under 40 award ceremony.
Born and raised on the west side of Detroit, Woods is an ambitious man who loves his city.
It was at the age of 17, that he made the decision to become an entrepreneur.
“I started my company inside my dad’s dollar store on Tireman,” said Woods. “We started off just printing t-shirts for people and the print company became such a success that I decided to create an actual brand called Enjoy Detroit. Now, it has become so big that we’re able to use a lot of the proceeds to give back to the city of Detroit.”
Led by Woods’ other business entity, Sboyenjoydetroit Promotions (SBOY stands for Successful Brothers Of Youth), the team prides itself on having a hands-on approach to providing numerous services to different communities within the city and has become one of the most popular grassroots efforts aimed at Detroit renewal. The Enjoy Detroit family is made up of men, women and youth from all walks of life working towards one common goal, revitalizing the communities in which we live.
The team not only gives their time for community clean ups, an initiative through which they clean up poverty-stricken areas. Woods also requires that everyone on staff dedicate their time during the holidays for clothing and food drives within those areas of the city.
“Everyone speaks so negative of Detroit, saying that we do not support one another and that we do not want to see others go to the next level. I am very blessed to say that those statements have not been true for me. Detroit has played a major role in my success. The city, from young to old has supported the movement beyond belief. The support of our city is what allows me to give back the way I do. It forces me to push harder!”
When Woods started that print company in the back of his father’s store he never imagined that the road he chose would lead him to the 40 Under 40 stage.
“I do not think words can express how I truly feel, God really surprises me everyday. I am honored to be recognized alongside these other amazing trailblazers and honorees. The Michigan Chronicle is bringing awareness to the fact that the upcoming generations are loosely following the footsteps of our former trailblazers while also making a blueprint of our own. It’s just an amazing feeling.”
Always one to motivate and uplift others, Woods has a message for young aspiring trailblazers.
“Never give up! Always follow your heart–stay true to your vision, heart, and goals. No one can stop you but you. Never let anyone talk you out of your destiny and always trust God no matter what.
