A new University of Michigan report says that half of Detroiter not only support reparations but also believe it needs to be a high priority for city councilmembers and other elected representatives.
The university’s Detroit Metro Area Communities Study and the Center for Racial Justice recently conducted the survey. According to the Detroit News, the survey confirmed the 2021 ballot initiative to have the Detroit City Council assemble a reparations taskforce. The taskforce will hold its first meeting on April 13.
The Michigan Chronicle covered this issue back in 2021. The article said that, if implemented, the funding for the reparations would come from a three percent tax on recreational marijuana and donations.
