The Azal Benne Lockett Foundation Celebrates 3rd Year of Supporting the Grieving Community

Dr. Portia Lockett

The morning opened with heartfelt prayer and uplifting words from our beloved Glenn McIntosh who recently elevated to the heavenly arena, Pastor George Williams, Executive Pastor Angela Caldwell, and Ellis Hayes, followed by an inspiring keynote message from Dr. Velva Burley Flowers. Her powerful words reminded attendees of the strength and resilience that faith and community bring in times of grief.

One of the most impactful parts of the morning came through testimonials from families and individuals supported by the foundation, who shared how their grief journey was lightened through compassion, resources, and encouragement. Their stories highlighted the foundation’s mission of helping people heal, offering hope, and holding hearts during the most difficult seasons of life.

In a spirit of generosity, the foundation presented $500 donations to Caleb’s Kids and Bianca’s Haven, two organizations that provide vital support for grieving children and families.

This milestone event was made possible through the generosity of community partners, including Huntington Bank, Comerica Bank, New York Life, Detroit Area Agency on Aging, AAA, Kemp Funeral Home, CNS, Brilliant Cities, Bankability, I Chess, Healing Within, and DWIHN. Their partnership ensures the foundation can continue its work of walking alongside grieving families with love and resources.

“Every prayer, every hug, every donation makes a difference,” shared Dr. Portia Lockett, founder of the Azal Benne Lockett Foundation. “We are committed to walking with our grieving community—helping them heal, holding their hearts, and giving them hope for tomorrow.”

As the foundation looks toward its fourth year, it plans to expand grief support programs, strengthen partnerships, and increase outreach so that even more families can experience healing and hope.

A video recap of the Prayer Breakfast is now available on the foundation’s website and social media channels, allowing the community to relive the highlights and share in the spirit of unity and healing.
