(Detroit, MI) – January is National Mentoring Month and raises awareness and highlights the positive impact mentoring has on young lives. Since 2002, National Mentoring Month promotes youth mentoring throughout the United States encouraging people to become youth mentors in their community and join with local mentoring programs.

The National CARES Mentoring Movement, founded by Susan L. Taylor, Editor-in-Chief Emeritus of Essence Magazine, will launch the Detroit CARES affiliate January 17th and 18th during National Mentoring Month.   Employing the National CARES principles, Detroit CARES is committed to improving the quality of life for Detroit’s children through mentoring.  The mission is to develop community engagement initiatives that model healthy lives and fosters camaraderie among existing organizations to identify specific gaps in support and service and address them with effective and sustainable mentoring opportunities.
