Shirley R. Stancato to join Wayne State University’s Board of Governors

Wayne State University will welcome one of their own to the Board of Governors.

On Dec. 12, Gov. Whitmer announced that Wayne State University alum Shirley R. Stancato will join the Board of Governors at Wayne State University. Stancato will be taking over for Kim Trent. Trent will be joining the Whitmer administration through the Labor Economic Opportunity leadership team.

Stancato was born in Detroit, MI. She graduated from Cass Technical High School and went on to receive her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Wayne State University. From there, she went on to work for Chase Bank and become a senior vice president, then became the longest-serving president-chief executive officer for non-profit organization New Detroit Inc.

Stancato currently serves on the advisory board for Fifth Third Bank-Eastern Michigan, the Coleman A. Young Foundation, and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. She’s also a member of the Detroit Zoological Commission and DTE Energy Community Advisory Council.

Stancato said that her latest endeavor is a full-circle moment which she takes very seriously.

“As a proud alumna, I’m honored that I have been selected to serve the students, staff, and alumni of Wayne State University,” said Stancato. “This is not a position that I take lightly. Throughout my career, I’ve been dedicated to advocating and elevating under-represented individuals. I will serve on the board with the mission of upholding and championing the positive reputation that Wayne State is known for.”

Gov. Whitmer also spoke about the appointing of Stancato to the Board of Governors.

“It’s imperative to have someone on the board who will focus on addressing the problems that are currently facing Wayne State, we must put the students first,” said Whitmer. “I believe that Shirley will work with the board through civil and respectful discourse, to ensure that Wayne State University is focused on providing a high-quality education to each student. Shirley is bringing an impressive leadership and advocacy background to the board, which is what Wayne State University needs to be even more successful.”

These problems that Gov. Whitmer is speaking about has been an area of strife for weeks. There’s been contention regarding the development of projects on campus, funding, and more. Gov. Whitmer stated that she’s been monitoring the situation closely but no further comments were provided.

Trent has a long history in politics. She’s worked alongside Congresswoman Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick, Senator Debbie Stabenow, and former Governor Jennifer Granholm.

Stancato will serve out the remainder of Trent’s term which ends on Jan 1, 2021.
