Mostyn Community Development (MCD) Free Virtual Graduation and Prom

The Coronavirus (COVID-19) epidemic has ended several year-end celebrations for high school students across the state. Many of those are high school seniors whose long-awaited proms and graduations have been canceled due to the rapid spread of the virus, causing a state of emergency shut down.  Local non-profit, Mostyn Community Development (MCD) is fighting back with their innovative spirit by providing a virtual prom and graduation for students throughout the state to attend – free of charge.

Mostyn Community Development’s focus is to build and nurture relationships with young people encouraging them to promote social awareness, interpersonal skills, leadership, critical thinking and reassert a sense of pride in their community. MCD specializes in providing service and assistance for academic enrichment to students deemed at-risk/underprivileged and special needs. During this time, Program Director Raphael Mostyn wants to utilize current circumstances to continue the traditions in a way that no one has ever experienced before.

“I want to create an opportunity to still attend life’s very special moments although our current circumstances are unfortunate,” said Mostyn, “this is a very difficult time for our students because they worked so hard to get to this point, only to have it taken away due to uncontrollable circumstances.” The virtual graduation and prom will be held via Facebook Watch and will include a live DJ, guest speaker, and a virtual tour guide. Registration is free and includes a free T-shirt to the first 100 students who register to attend. T-shirts are also available for purchase and all proceeds will go toward scholarship recipients.

The live “Michigan High School Virtual Prom” will take place on May 23, 2020, at 6:00 p.m. and the “Michigan High School Virtual Graduation” will be June 5, 2020, at 6:00 p.m. All interested individuals and parties are encouraged to register to ensure that they are properly acknowledged during the live virtual broadcast. Participants are also highly encouraged to sign-up for Facebook to ensure access via Facebook Watch.
