Mayor Mike Duggan is asking Detroit residents to help clear catch basins on neighborhood side streets over the next few days to help prevent flooding.  After near-record snow accumulation across the region this winter, temperatures in the 40s and heavy rain forecast in the coming days could lead to major street flooding issues.
The City of Detroit, Wayne County, and the State of Michigan will be working to clear catch basins on the major streets and freeways they maintain.
City spokeswoman Alexis Wiley said that residents’ assistance in keeping side streets clear of excess water will be of great assistance.
“With so many catch basins across the city, this is a great opportunity for City workers and residents to team up to help prevent a problem in our neighborhoods,” Wiley said. “With temperatures expected to drop below freezing again after the thaw, we all want to make sure that water is able to drain so it doesn’t freeze and cause even more trouble.”
If drains in neighborhoods prove too difficult to clear, residents are asked to call the City of the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department hotline at (313) 267-7401.
