The 2009 season is looking to become the best season for veteran road racer Bill Lester. The Atlanta resident picked up his second straight top five and fifth consecutive top ten as he teamed up with co-driver Ryan Dalziel to finish fifth out of a field of 32 cars at the Rolex Grand Am Crown Royal 200 held recently at the Watkins Glen Road Course in Watkins Glen, New York.
Lester and Dalziel completed the scheduled 93 laps at an average speed of 12.897 miles per hour behind the wheel of the number 45 Orbit Racing BMW powered-Riley. The fastest lap during the race for the two was time of 1:06.286. Lester has recorded top ten finishes this year at Virginia International (9th), Laguna Seca, California (10th), Daytona Beach, Florida (3rd) and two races at Watkins Glen (8th and 5th).
The Rolex Grand Am season finishes its August schedule with a race north of the border at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal, Quebec, on Aug. 29. The remaining races on the Grand Am schedule are at Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele, Utah on Sept. 19, 2009 and at Homestead, Florida on Oct. 10.

Harold Martin of West Bloomfield made the show at the recent International Hot Rod Association meet, the Northern Nationals in Martin, Michigan. Martin racing his new prototype, the 2010 Martin M4, qualified 14th fastest in the Pro-Modified Division with top end speed of 207.27 mph with an
elapsed time 6.362 seconds. He lost in the first round to Ed Hoover’s ’68 Camaro averaging only 149.65. He led at the start of the race and led for 200 feet before the car encountered some problems and was overtaken by Hoover.
Despite the shortcoming, Martin is currently fifth in IHRA Pro-Modified driver’s points with 137. Martin will compete in both IHRA meets in September at Epping New Hampshire on the 11-13 and at Budds Creek, Maryland, Sept. 25-27.
California go-kart sensation David Sims, Jr. of Rialto, California has taken the lead in driver’s points in the Southern California Sprints Championship at the tender age of eight years old. Sims recently competed in a recent So Cal Sprints race.
He finished 6th in a pre-main event due to engine problems. After an engine change, Sims started sixth in the 16-lap main event and finished fourth at the checkered flag.
There are three races left in the So Cal Sprints Championship.
