The results are in and they are in line with what voters voiced at the polls yesterday.
Current Mayor Glenda Maria McDonald earned 52% of the vote with 718. Shamayim “Mama Shu” Harris came in second 507 votes equating to 37% of the vote, according to Click on Detroit. The two will face off in November to determine the future leadership of Highland Park, Michigan.
On her Facebook page, McDonald wrote: “Thank you Highland Parkers. 718 (unofficial votes) of you chose to moved me forward to the General Election. I am so humbled by your acknowledgement of my team’s hard work over the last 4 years. My administration started the work to move Highland Park forward, and we are ready to complete the job.”
As previously reported, Highland Park residents expressed that this year’s Mayoral race found them divided between community impact and office experience. That was evidenced by the results.
One social media user wrote, “Just thinking what a wonderful thing it would be if after the election, all the candidates worked together with other Highland Parkers of goodwill, to share their resources, information and efforts to make Highland Park the best it can be. Time out for wasting energy on negativity, distrust, blame and shame. There’s a lot of good happening in the city. We must continue to build upon it.”
Elene Robinson received 7% of the vote with 93, while Joshua LaMere received 54 votes amounting to 4% of the vote. Totals for write-in candidate, J. Douglas Hollie were not reported by Click on Detroit.
With 100 percent of precincts reporting. Highland Park’s voter turnout was quite low with only 1,372 votes in a city of more than 7,000 residents.
A Facebook group called Restore, Build, and Empower Highland Park, MI also published other races.
