HAP’s Dec. 12 Expo will help the uninsured get healthcare answers and coverage

It’s Time to Pick a Plan.
Time is running out to pick a 2014 health plan.
“Detroit families are only a few weeks away from an important deadline for coverage via the Health Insurance Marketplace and all of us at Health Alliance Plan (HAP) are working really hard to make sure that they are ready,” states DeAndre Lipscomb, HAP’s vice president of community outreach and public relations.
December 23 is the final date that individuals and families can enroll for healthcare coverage effective Jan. 1, 2014.
“Lipscomb, who is among many insurers monitoring enrollment trends, is concerned that only 1,200 of 515,000 eligible tri-county (Wayne, Oakland & Macomb) residents have enrolled for coverage since open enrollment began October 1st.”
That’s why HAP is increasing its community outreach at local churches, community centers and business facilities.
“We want to make sure that local residents understand the implications of what many commonly refer to as “Obamacare,” or the Affordable Care Act (ACA),” states Lipscomb, who will be on site at one of HAP’s most visible events on Thursday, Dec. 12 at Greater Grace Temple.
The health insurance “101-style” event will provide visitors with access to insurance experts who will walk them through the eligibility and enrollment process, as well as the opportunity to hear from special guests Dr. Frank McGeorge of Henry Ford Hospital and WCHB morning host Mildred Gaddis, who will speak to the importance of health insurance and how to protect your health and your family’s future
Free flu shots, blood pressure checks, healthy cooking demos and a kidzone are a part of planned activities.
“The expo will give the community an opportunity to experience the level of care HAP provides all its members from our personalized customer service to our exclusive concierge support, which provides members with individualized support for the first two years of enrollment to special discounts from Weight Watchers®. We’ll also have free adult flu shots and blood pressure screenings and mini-massages available for attendees.
As important, the Health Care and Wellness Expo promises to detail the difference between the levels of coverage, helping participants understand the ultimate cost of plan options, which can vary widely depending on deductible, co-insurance and other benefit options.
Visitors will leave with a handy DVD, which they can replay at their convenience in order to gain greater understanding of the material covered at the expo.
