Federal Agents Search Rep. Ilhan Omar’s Home in Ongoing Criminal Investigation

Federal authorities executed a search warrant at the Washington, D.C., area home of Representative Ilhan Omar on Monday morning. Federal agents searched the Washington-area home of U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar early Monday as part of an ongoing criminal investigation, according to the Department of Justice.

Homeland Security Investigations carried out the search under a judicially authorized warrant secured by the Justice Department. Federal officials have not publicly disclosed the full scope of the investigation or announced any charges against Omar.

“Today in the Washington, D.C. area, Homeland Security Investigations executed a judicially authorized search warrant secured by the Department of Justice,” a DOJ spokesperson said. “This enforcement action is part of an ongoing federal investigation.”

The search reportedly relates to an investigation into immigration paperwork completed for Omar when she was a child, according to Fox News Digital, which cited an unidentified source familiar with the matter. Reuters also reported that federal authorities are examining possible immigration fraud involving those records.

Omar, a Minnesota Democrat who was born in Somalia and came to the United States as a child, had not publicly responded to the search as of Monday morning.

The investigation comes at a politically charged moment, just weeks before the Nov. 3 midterm elections. Omar is seeking another term representing Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District.

She has also been a frequent target of President Donald Trump and several of his allies, who have repeatedly questioned her immigration history and called for federal scrutiny of her citizenship. Omar has denied allegations of immigration fraud.

The administration began investigating Omar last year after Trump and others revived claims that she had improperly obtained U.S. citizenship. Those allegations have been disputed by Omar, and no criminal charges have been announced in connection with Monday’s search.

The latest development follows months of increasingly heated rhetoric directed at Omar and Minnesota’s Somali American community. Trump has repeatedly criticized Omar publicly and, in recent weeks, has also made derogatory comments about Somali immigrants. Omar has described the president’s repeated focus on her as an “unhealthy and creepy obsession.”

The search also comes less than a month after a Minnesota man was sentenced to 14 months in prison for assaulting Omar. The man pleaded guilty after admitting he attacked the congresswoman because he disagreed with her political views.

Homeland Security Investigations, commonly known as HSI, is the investigative arm of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The agency handles a range of federal investigations involving immigration, financial crimes, human trafficking and other cross-border offenses.

The Justice Department has not said what agents were seeking during Monday’s search, what materials may have been seized or how long the investigation has been underway.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
