Elon Musk is once again under fire after lashing out over rumors that Lupita Nyong’o could portray Helen of Troy in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming adaptation of The Odyssey.
Over the weekend, Musk took to X to criticize Nolan, writing that the acclaimed filmmaker had “lost his integrity.” The comment came in response to a post complaining that Helen of Troy was historically described as “fair-skinned” and blonde — and that casting a Black actress would be an “insult” to Homer’s epic.
Musk amplified that criticism by engaging directly with it, fueling backlash across social media.
What’s notable: there has been no official confirmation that Nyong’o is playing Helen of Troy. While she is listed in the film’s cast on IMDb, her role has not been publicly disclosed, according to industry listings and reporting. Still, the speculation was enough to spark outrage — and Musk’s reaction quickly became part of it.
Critics pointed out the irony of Musk questioning anyone else’s “integrity,” particularly given his own recent controversies. As head of the Trump administration’s now-defunct Department of Government Efficiency, Musk oversaw a cost-cutting effort that, according to a July report released by congressional Democrats, resulted in federal employees being paid not to work — a move that ultimately cost taxpayers an estimated $21.7 billion.

On The View, co-host Whoopi Goldberg addressed Musk’s comments head-on, calling out the premise behind his criticism.
“I don’t know if you realize this, Lupita is also considered one of the most beautiful women in the world,” Goldberg said during the segment. “So I’m not sure what you’re trying to say.” She added that Musk didn’t need to see the film at all and suggested he “look in the mirror” before weighing in on others’ appearances.
Goldberg also pushed back on the idea that fictional characters must conform to rigid physical descriptions, noting the irony of policing beauty standards in a story rooted in myth. She ended her remarks by making it clear she wasn’t interested in sparring with Musk online — though she didn’t mince words about how she felt.
Co-host Sunny Hostin echoed that sentiment, pointing out that characters like Helen of Troy are fictional and that beauty itself is subjective. Hostin accused Musk of promoting white supremacist ideas online and said his comments fit a broader pattern she finds troubling.
Meanwhile, Sara Haines cut through the tension with humor, joking that someone should probably remind Musk that Jesuswas Middle Eastern — before adding that the billionaire has “bigger fish to fry” than hypothetical casting decisions.
As of now, neither Nolan nor Nyong’o has addressed the speculation publicly.
