Detroit families will gather on the city’s growing greenway network later this week to celebrate one of the city’s most iconic sports heroes during the first-ever Joe Louis Birthday Celebration.
Hosted by the Joe Louis Greenway Partnership, the free community event will take place Saturday, May 16, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Warren Trailhead, 7242 McDonald St. Organizers say the celebration is designed to honor the life and legacy of heavyweight boxing champion Joe Louis while bringing residents together through sports, music, culture and family-friendly activities.
The event will feature youth boxing demonstrations, golf activities, live music, interactive games and cultural programming centered on the legendary boxer, who was born in Alabama but became one of Detroit’s most celebrated figures during his rise to international fame.
Leona Medley, executive director of the Joe Louis Greenway Partnership, said the celebration reflects the broader mission of the Greenway project, which aims to connect neighborhoods and communities across Detroit.
“This first-ever Joe Louis Birthday Celebration is about bringing people together — just like Joe Louis did,” Medley said. “We’re activating the Greenway in a way that reflects Southeast Michigan’s pride, history and future.”
Organizers expect the event to attract families from across the city, offering residents a chance to engage with the Greenway while learning more about the enduring impact of Louis, whose achievements extended beyond boxing and into the broader civil rights and cultural landscape of America.
A special guest at the event will be Joyce Louis-Barrow, daughter of Joe Louis and a member of the Joe Louis Greenway Partnership Board. She said the celebration is a meaningful way to connect younger generations to her father’s story.
“I’m honored to see my father celebrated in a way that connects generations,” Louis-Barrow said. “It makes me incredibly proud to serve on the Joe Louis Greenway Partnership Board. His legacy continues to inspire people of all ages, and moments like this remind us why his story still matters today.”
In addition to sports and entertainment, the event will provide opportunities for community engagement and interviews with local leaders and partner organizations involved with the Greenway initiative.
The Joe Louis Birthday Celebration is free and open to the public. Organizers encourage residents of all ages to attend and participate in a day dedicated to honoring a Detroit legend while celebrating community connection along the city’s expanding Greenway network.
