Detroit Parks and Recreation to start youth basketball league in 2020

The Detroit Parks and Recreation will provide youth with a chance to exercise their talent with their new Youth Basketball League. The basketball league will take place from January 18 through March 28. There will be co-ed age groups which include:

  • Mighty Mites: 4-6
  • Pee Wee: 7-8
  • Ten and under
  • 12 and under
  • 15 and under

Surrounding recreation centers will have their teams, and all games are at different centers. The cost is $30 per person if you’re a Detroit resident and $40 if you’re a non-resident. These prices include uniforms, skills, and drills. Each child must provide a birth certificate to play. TCF Bank sponsors the league.

The Detroit Parks and Recreation center offers other sports including Boxing, Baseball, and Aquatics. They also have an afterschool recreation program for kids ages K-8. The following schools host the program:

  • Earhart, 1000 Scotten – 2:40pm-6pm
  • Erma Henderson, 16101 W. Chicago – 4:10pm-6pm
  • Gardner, 6528 Mansfield – 3:40pm-6pm
  • Gompers, 14450 Burt Rd – 2:40pm-6pm
  • John R King, 15850 Strathmoor – 2:40 pm-6 pm
  • Mackenzie, 10147 W. Chicago – 3:40pm-6pm
  • Ronald Brown, 11530 E. Outer Dr – 2:40 pm-6 pm
  • Schulze, 10700 Santa Maria St – 3:40pm-6pm
  • Wayne, 10633 Courville St – 4:10pm-6pm

The afterschool program will run from September 23, 2019 – June 5, 2020, Monday through Friday. The program is only available to Detroit children.
