On May 18th, the Detroit People’s Food Co-op will hold a grand opening for its much-awaited Detroit Food Commons. The event promises an exciting day full of activities, delicious food, live music, and captivating performances that will entertain visitors of all ages. This is a fantastic opportunity for the community to come together and celebrate the opening of this new community hub that that will not only provide fresh, locally sourced, and healthy food options for the people of Detroit but a space for community outreach, advocates and culinary entrepreneurs to gather.
The Co-op has two floors. The first floor houses a grocery store with fresh produce and locally sourced products and a hot bar that offers a variety of meal options, from grilled chicken to rotating soups of the day. On the 2nd floor is a 3,400 sq. ft. Mama Imani Humphrey Banquet Hall that will be used for receptions, community lectures, meetings, film presentations, live performances, and other events. Kujichgulia Kitchens is a shared-use space for rent to chefs, caterers, bakers, food trucks, and other food entrepreneurs.
The festivities will begin with a vibrant ribbon-cutting ceremony at 11 am, followed by a diverse lineup of performances including a drum call and sounds by DJ Eddie Riott that will keep you entertained until 5 pm. If you want to soak up some sunshine and enjoy the beautiful weather, check out the outdoor activities and programming from 12 pm to 5 pm. Expect to find an array of fun-filled activities such as chalk games, selfie installations, food Co-op booths, and scheduled walking tours showcasing the new facility. There will be food vendors as well.
The celebration will have something for everyone. For the little ones, there will be a designated play zone with exciting inflatables to jump around in. For young adults, classic games like card games and tic-tac-toe. If you want to learn a new step or bust a move, join the hustle-dancing session with an instructor. There will be plenty of other activities and surprises throughout the day.
The Detroit People’s Food Co-op is a unique model, serving an urban, predominately African American, low and moderate-income community in Detroit. It’s not just a place to get fresh food, it’s a community hub. And now, it’s housed in the newly built Detroit Food Common Building, a space that’s more than just a building. It’s a symbol of community resilience and progress. The building, is owned by the joint venture, Detroit Food Commons L.L., formed by the Detroit Black Community Food Sovereignty Network and Develop Detroit Inc.
