AARP Releases Nonpartisan Voter Guides

Nonpartisan AARP released voter guides today featuring positions from U.S. Senate, Congressional and Gubernatorial and other statewide candidates – in their own words – on critical issues including Social Security, Medicare, and financial security. Voters of all ages may view the voter guides at www.aarp.org/yourvote.

“AARP wants to make sure our members and all voters know what the candidates are saying – and not saying – about key issues that matter to them and their families,” said AARP Executive Vice President Nancy LeaMond. “Our nonpartisan voter guides help voters cut through the political clutter and pressure candidates to share their views on lifeline issues like Medicare and Social Security before Election Day.”

In Michigan, the Voter Guide covers races for: Governor, between incumbent Republican Rick Snyder and Democratic challenger Mark Schauer; U.S. Senate between Republican Terri Lynn Land and Democrat Gary Peters; and U.S. House districts. Voters can enter their address to see responses from general election candidates in their specific races.

In the Michigan race for governor, the AARP Voter Guide poses these questions:

*  Considering that family caregivers are often on call 24/7 while holding down full-time jobs, what would you do to help them continue to safely care for their loved ones, at home? Further, would you support laws that call for hospitals to recognize and train family caregivers when their loved ones leave the hospital?

*  If budget cuts or tax reforms are implemented in your state, how will you ensure that any such changes avoid hurting low and moderate-income populations while also safeguarding the financial security of the 50-plus population?

*  With fewer jobs offering pensions, some public pension systems facing underfunding, and more than 70 million Americans without access to a retirement account at work, what will you do to help Michiganders save so they can have a secure financial future?

*  Will you support adoption of the Uniform Adult Guardianship and Protective Proceedings Jurisdiction Act?

AARP’s federal guide poses three questions on Social Security, Medicare, and Financial Security to candidates in all 471 federal races:

*  How would you protect Social Security for today’s seniors and strengthen it for future generations?

*  How would you put Medicare on stronger financial ground and protect today’s seniors and future retirees from the burden of rising health costs?

*  How would you help Americans save so they can secure their future and live independently as they age?

The responses, which appear alongside AARP principles on each issue, consist of publicly available information and excerpts from candidate campaign sources. Responses from the gubernatorial candidates were furnished by the campaigns.

Visitors to www.aarp.org/yourvote can also contact the campaigns with their comments or questions and find out where they can vote in their state.

The nonpartisan AARP does not support, oppose, or contribute to any candidates for elected office.
