New measures are being put in place for sexual assault survivors. Survivors will now be able to send a text for emergency assistance.
Michigan has already established a phone hotline for sexual assault (855-VOICES4), but now, survivors can send a text to 1-866-238-1454 in case of an emergency. Gov. Whitmer spoke about this new feature in a press statement:
“This texting feature is an important way to make sure every survivor in Michigan has direct access to the support and resources they deserve,” Gov. Whitmer said. “I want every survivor in our state to know that your voice and your story matter, and when you’re ready to talk, we’re ready to listen.”
The hotline is available 24/7 and free of charge. Also, information shared across the hotline will not be reported to law enforcement agencies.
This news comes at a time where sexual assault, along with sex trafficking is at an all-time high. Michigan is number two on the list of states with the highest amount of open sex trafficking cases (383). Black women and children are the most vulnerable victims of trafficking so it’s imperative that protective measures be put in place for everyone.
