After 11 grueling months on the campaign trail, Democratic candidate announced to her 3.3 million followers on Twitter that she’s resigning from the 2020 presidential race. Even though she will no longer run for president, she still wants to ensure her supports that she isn’t going anywhere.
“I am still very much in this fight,” said Harris in a short post on Medium.com. “I will keep fighting every day for what this campaign has been about. Justice for The People. All the people.”
“For The People,” was her campaign slogan throughout her trek. She focused on key issues such as affordable housing, gun violence, and justice for African Americans. While others argued she didn’t have the power to win, she had plenty of support from the community and celebrities such as Lee Daniels and Wanda Sykes. She stated that she’s ending her campaign for “financial” reasons.
For some black women, Harris was a symbol of hope in a country that overlooks the achievements of our community. This is something she also spoke about in her open letter.
“Our campaign uniquely spoke to the experiences of Black women and people of color — and their importance to the success and future of this party.,” Harris said. “Our campaign demanded no one should be taken for granted by any political party.”
