The Wayne State University College of Nursing’s Office of Health Research (OHR) honored colleagues and showcased scientific inquiries and innovative projects during Research Day 2013.
Nancy Artinian, associate dean for research and director of OHR, was pleased with this year’s event.
“It was a wonderful day,” she says. “The attendance was great and it was exciting to watch the level of engagement between our researchers as they explained their studies to our guests.”
The annual Research Day brings together faculty, alumni and students for a guest speaker and the presentation of several awards, including Alumna of the Year, which was presented to Martha (Beth) Horsburgh, PhD ’94, by Frances Jackson, ’71, president of the college’s Alumni Association.
Horsburgh is associate vice president for research at the University of Saskatchewan and vice president for research and innovation for Canada’s Saskatoon Health Region.
Assistant Professor Margaret Falahee received a grant from Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI), Lambda Chapter, a Research Day sponsor. Sheria Robinson, STTI president, presented the award to support Falahee’s research on whether motivational interviewing can help low-income, uninsured women increase their physical activity.
The tone of the day was set by guest speaker Professor Jean McSweeney, an internationally recognized leader in clinical research on coronary heart disease (CHD) and symptoms of myocardial infarctions in women.
McSweeney, associate dean for research at the College of Public Health at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, developed the McSweeney Acute Prodromal Myocardial Infarction Symptom Survey to help women and health care providers recognize earlier the symptoms of CHD. Existing assessment tools, she says, were established for men and are not accurate for women.
After the program in the Spencer M. Partrich auditorium, a poster presentation and reception followed in the Cohn Building, where faculty, students and clinicians displayed the findings of their research. Poster award winners included Falahee and Cynthera McNeill; Assistant Professor Kay Klymko, director of the College of Nursing’s Adult and Gerontological Primary Care Nurse Practitioner Program; and Catherine Draus of Henry Ford Health Systems.
