Second Baptist has operated in downtown Detroit since its organization and has long had a mission to know Christ and equip His people for service. This mission has been demonstrated by its service as a station on the Underground Railroad from 1836 to 1865, and the establishment of the first school for black children in 1839 with its first pastor, Rev. William C. Monroe as teacher. Second Baptist is proud of its direct and indirect influence on 30 churches in the Detroit area. During the Great Migration, the church offered information on housing and relocation and served as an employment center. The church has worked collaboratively throughout its history with activist and community organizations. Second continues to serve the community by feeding the homeless and partnering with downtown schools and communities.
