In the ingenious adaptation of comedian and nationally syndicated radio host Steve Harvey’s New York Times best-selling book Act Like A Lady, Think Like a Man, we met a group of close friends whose romantic entanglements with the women they pursued made for plenty of sharp comedy and heartfelt reflection once Harvey’s generous relationship advice was added to the mix.
In the end, the non-committer proposed, the dreamer won the heart of the independent woman, the player settled down with the 90-day-rule stickler, the mama’s boy broke free of his mother’s grip and vowed to put the cute single mom first, and the happily divorced guy went back to his wife.
Leave it to a big wedding in Las Vegas, however, to make the next stage in these couples’ lives another fraught confluence of fears, desires and good intentions gone wrong. In the highly anticipated sequel Think Like a Man Too, the beloved characters are back, and there are still some lingering questions:
Is now the time for Jeremy and Kristen to have a baby? Can Lauren and Dominic survive rocketing careers that might take them in different directions? Mya loves Zeke, but what does she think of – as he’s apparently known in Vegas — Zeke the Freak?
Let’s not forget about the bride and groom, Michael and Candace. Can they get hitched without … ahem … any hitches?
Can these relationships survive against the backdrop of Vegas?
All the original comedy’s stars return — La La Anthony (“La La’s Full Court Life,” Baggage Claim), Michael Ealy (“Almost Human,” About Last Night), Jerry Ferrara (“Entourage”), Meagan Good (Anchorman 2, “Deception,”), Regina Hall (Best Man Holiday, Scary Movie), Kevin Hart (Ride Along, Let Me Explain), Taraji P. Henson (“Person of Interest,” No Good Deed), Terrence J (“E! Regina Hall and Terrence J who play the focal couple in the movie Candace and Michael sat down with me during their promotional tour visit to Detroit to talk about the movie and more. The interview, which was more like a conversation amidst old friends, was laid back from the beginning with Regina and I bonding over beauty tips. Regina credits her makeup artist for her polished red carpet look and suggested MAC as a point of shop for her lash look, ladies take note.
Beauty quickly turned to astrology when I mentioned that Regina was a Sagittarius, and wondered how her higher learning zodiac sign played into her becoming her character.
“I think it’s a little bit of both (astrology and talent). I think we all have so many parts and components within us and when you really figure out the nuances of what the writer and director want to bring out, it helps.”
She continued, “One of the things with Candace is that she is really grounded, there is an aspect of her I remember in every scene. If not, it will just seem like you’ve seen Regina I want people to see the character.”
Although Taurian Terrence J is not a subscriber to astrology he can attest for the loyalty that is an attribute with most Taurians, and his character Michael is no different when being forced to do some strange things to save his friend, Cedric, played by Kevin Hart. Terrance admitted how far he would go for a friend in need,.
“I’m a frat boy (Omega Psi Phi) so in college you had to do all types of things, and so if I had to be a part of a strip club type of scene for my friend, I admit, I would do it,” he explained.
One of my favorite scenes in the movie is the nineties re-enactment of the video “Poison” that all the ladies of Think Like A Man Too participate in. I asked Regina Hall, how she enjoyed playing this scene out.
“I liked doing the fall on the walkway, it was fun to choreograph an actual fall,” she said. “I had to be careful not to twist my ankle, but that was a lot of fun. I also had fun with our dramatic scenes. It was great to reach deeper after being in silly for so long.”
On the subject of dramatic, I was curious about how the movie couple was able to bring out the chemistry that was seen on the big screen.
Terrence J said, “When you’re on set and you have Kevin Hart, Romany Malco and Gary Owens all doing their comedic acting, it’s nice when I am with Regina I can really act. When I am with the guys it’s just a free-for-all, and add Jenifer Lewis to it and then you have to dig deep.”
Regina chimed in on Jenifer Lewis: “Jenifer is the veteran. She demands that we bring it, she hushes us on set. When she enters the tone of room changes.”
Terrence and Regina agreed working with each other was a joy.
Think Like a Man Too hits theatres on June 20th and Regina says she wants men and women both to laugh, but the heart of the movie is still there. It’s about relationships, but you can have fun as a couple too. The movie is rated PG-13 by the MPAA for the following reasons: crude sexual content including references, partial nudity, language and drug material. Running time is 1 hour and 45 minutes.
