Detroit (November 23, 2015) – The Michigan Chronicle has announced that six prominent philanthropic African American families will receive the Community Spirit Award at its annual Legacy in Motion Newsmaker’s Gala to be held on Thursday, December 10, 2015 at the Garden Theater, Detroit. Dubbed the Wright Six, each family donated $100,000 to the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History in honor of the museum’s historic 50th Anniversary. Collectively they donated $600,000 contributing to the nearly $2 million raised overall.
The Wright Six Community Spirit Award honorees include:
- The Pickard Family Fund: Vivian Pickard and Dr. William F. Pickard
- Prestige Automotive: Gregory and Jacki Jackson
- Bridgewater Interiors: Ronald and Ann Hall
- Roy and Maureen Roberts
- Sid E. Taylor Foundation: Sid E. Taylor
- Vinnie Johnson
“What these six families were able to do for the Wright Museum is outstanding,” said Hiram E. Jackson, publisher of the Michigan Chronicle. “We wanted to recognize them at the gala to show our appreciation and convey a strong message that we, as African Americans, support our cultural institutions and our community as a whole.”
The Michigan Chronicle Legacy in Motion Newsmaker’s Gala is one of metropolitan Detroit’s premier events that celebrates individuals who have made outstanding community contributions. This year’s theme, “Back to Paradise,” is also the theme for the Michigan Chronicle’s 80th year anniversary. Eight decades ago, in 1936, the Michigan Chronicle was founded in an area of Detroit called Paradise Valley. Next year, 80 years later, the Chronicle will relocate to 1452 Randolph, in the heart of Paradise Valley. This year’s Legacy in Motion Newsmaker’s Gala will formally kick-off our 2016 year-long 80th Anniversary celebration.
