Rep. Hakeem Jeffries is already making history.
Jeffries, 52, recently announced his bid to run as the first Black leader of a congressional caucus, replacing Nancy Pelosi if elected, NBC News reported.
The New York representative would be the first Black Democratic leader in this role. Jeffries is running alongside Reps. Katherine Clark, 59, and Pete Aguilar, 43.
Jeffries, already a top-ranking House Democrat, announced his run after Pelosi made her own historic announcement that she is completing her two-decade tenure. Pelosi is the first female speaker of the House, according to the article.
The Wall Street Journal reported that Jeffries would be also creating a generational shift if elected as he would potentially be replacing his 82-year-old predecessor.
“His style will be quite different than Speaker Pelosi’s but I think equally effective and probably more reflective of where this caucus is at and wishes to go to,” said Rep. Dean Phillips (D., Minn.) in the article.
