Pretty Brown Girl Foundation expanding reach with partnership

PBCDetroit girls can learn the importance of self-esteem and to appreciate their skin color during a 20-week program beginning October 3 with the Detroit Recreation Department and the Pretty Brown Girl Foundation.
Launched two years ago, the Pretty Brown Girl Foundation was created to encourage K-12 girls to celebrate the shades of brown and inspire positive self-esteem through the program and a club for girls.
The company formed by Detroit native Sheri Crawley started with products for girls and women, inspired by her own two daughters.  However, she quickly saw the need to marry her popular products with a custom self-esteem program for girls around the world.
“I consider it a blessing to have our program changing lives right in the same city that I was born and raised,” Crowley said. “This partnership with Detroit Recreation Department and Adams-Butzel Center will give inner city girls at different ages and stages in life a safe space to have their voices heard.”
The program is already in place at several schools including Cass Tech, Renaissance, Cornerstone, Bagley and Henry Ford Academy. The program at Adams-Butzel will be the first location in the Recreation Department and will offer the after-school program “Building Leaders from the Inside Out.”
“We are pleased that we will be able to offer a program to empower our young ladies to be confident and to achieve their best,” said Recreation Department Director Alicia Bradford.
Learn more about the program and to sign up, attend an open house Saturday, Sept. 12 from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. at the Adams-Butzel Complex, 10500 Lyndon, Detroit, MI 48238.
To find out more about the program, contact Adams-Butzel Supervisor Morae Cochran at (313) 628-0990 or via email at cochranm@detroitmi.gov.
