Track star Sha’Carri Richardson’s name is becoming a household one after she won the women’s 100 meters at the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials on Saturday, June 19 in Oregon, Black Enterprise reported.
Richardson, 21, beat out other young athletic competitors and won an opportunity to represent Team USA in Tokyo this summer.
Richardson sprinted to the finish line in the final remaining seconds, gaining her a winning time of 10.86 seconds. The second place finisher was Javianne Oliver, came in at 10.99 seconds. Teahna Daniels finished third in 11.03 seconds. All three women have earned a ticket to the Tokyo Olympics, the article added. They will be in the Olympic Games for the first time. 2016 Olympian Jenna Prandini will be an alternate for the Olympic team — she placed fourth in 11.11 seconds.
After Richardson won, she gave a hug to her emotional grandmother. Prior to that moment caught on camera, family members cheered from the bleachers to celebrate her amazing victory.
“Emotionally…unbelievable,” Richardson told NBC when she described her win. “The fact that I am an Olympian.. [It’s been] a dream since I’ve been young. I’m pretty sure everybody’s dream as a track athlete. Being happy is an understatement. I am highly blessed and grateful.”
In April, Richardson gained fame for clocking a speed of 10.72 seconds at the Miramar Invitation. She became known as the sixth-fastest woman in history with the fastest time ever in Miramar, Florida, per the article.
According to Runner’s World, Richardson is now the second-fastest runner in the world. She’s closely behind Olympic champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce of Jamaica. Fraser-Pryce ran 10.62, representing the second-fastest 100-meter time in history, according to the article.
