Atlantic Impact, a non-profit organization in Detroit, is allowing high school juniors to travel abroad. While traveling abroad typically occurs during one’s college years, Atlanta Impact wants to expose students to this unique opportunity through their program, “Our World.” Our World will allow students to learn about different cultures while embracing the entire experience as their own.
Anise Hayes believes that for students, “traveling internationally and experiencing different cultures expands learning.” “It is rare for students that we work with to have traveled outside of the country, and only a few have been on a plane. Our program gives high school students those opportunities.”
The deadline to apply for the program is January 31. All students will be placed on specific dates and times: June 17-25; July 7-15; or July 20-28. The two destinations this year are Barbados and Trinidad. The cost is free, but students must be:
- A Detroit resident
- In their junior year of high school
- Have grades that reflect the desire to attend a university
- Attend the college readiness program on February 21
- Obtain a passport before the travel date
Atlantic Impact, established in 2013, strives to “design experiential trips that span neighborhood boundaries, deepen students’ networks, and spark educational curiosity.” Since starting, they’ve taken over 80 students overseas to various countries.
