The NFL Alumni Detroit Chapter hosted its annual NFL Draft Party at the Emagine Theater in Royal Oak, where they awarded six deserving graduating seniors from Wayne County $15,000 in college scholarships, Microsoft gift cards and the new Invoke, voice activated speaker from Harmon/Kardon, to help jump start their college career.
Ron Rice, Scott Hankins, and Reggie Lee founded this fundraising event seven years ago which features influencers from a variety of sports, entertainment and businesses. The evening benefits the Alumni Student Athlete Scholarship Fund supporting college bound male and female high school seniors in Wayne County. The NFL Alumni believes that student athletes should be recognized for their academic achievements and encouraged to pursue goals beyond athletics.
“Each year, the NFL Alumni Detroit awards scholarships to student-athletes as they transition from high school to college,” said NFL Alumni Scholarship Chairman, Cyrill Weems. “We are excited and proud to be in a position to provide financial support to eligible student-athletes. The NFL Draft Party is truly a great event that allows our student-athlete supporters to enjoy a great evening while also financially supporting the NFL Alumni Detroit”.
The event was hosted by Detroit Lions guard T.J. Lang, who is in his second year with the team and attended Brother Rice High School in Birmingham, and Eastern Michigan University.
“Growing up in metro Detroit, I understand how important it is to support our community and how financial contributions to college-bound students can jumpstart one’s college career,” said Lang. “I am honored to be able to be a change agent in these young athletes’ lives and support this great event.”
This year’s scholarship recipients were Annette Wilson from Trenton High School, Ryan McAuliffe of Salem High School, Vernon Scott Rushlow II of Stevenson High School, Kinarri Anderson from Cass Technical High School, Aric Ramos of Edsel Ford High School, and Emily Caragay from Plymouth High School.
