New Apartment Complex ‘The Garvey’ Proposed for Detroit’s West Side

A new housing development could be coming soon to Dexter and Davison.

“The Garvey,” the proposed name for a multi-unit apartment complex slated for construction at Dexter Boulevard and Davison Avenue on Detroit’s west side, was announced by Promised Land Realty, a firm co-owned by developer Trevor Sarter of Detroit.

The multi-unit complex is named for Marcus Garvey, the liberationist for whom some parts of Dexter are remembered by with an honorific blue street sign. Sarter says the proposed complex also is named for Marcus Garvey Woodson, “a former chief land appraiser” for the City of Detroit who is also Sarter’s grandfather.

“The Garvey represents a fully realized architect vision designed to activate the street, respect the neighborhood, and stand the test of time,” Sarter writes. “Every line, proportion and material choice was made with intention.”

Pending construction, Sarter says the project already has approval through the Detroit Building Authority and a retail partnership with the Neighborhood Grocery, a small retailer in the Jefferson-Chalmers area. “The project is fully aligned with Mayor Mary Sheffield’s vision for equitable, neighborhood-driven development, a vision we came up in, believed in, and are now helping to bring to life,” Sarter writes.

More information, including rental rates, will be available in the near future.
