Neighborhood groups and organizations can begin registering for the fourth annual ARISE Detroit! Neighborhoods Day, which will be held Aug. 7 in neighborhoods throughout Detroit.
Last year, more than 100 events were held on ARISE Detroit! Neighborhoods Day, stretching from the riverfront to Eight Mile Road.
“With all the concern the community has recently expressed about Detroit’s national image with the media, this is a great opportunity for people all over Detroit to show what they are doing to make their neighborhoods better,” said Luther Keith, executive director of ARISE Detroit! “We are excited about how this great new annual tradition for Detroit continues to grow each year.”
The idea behind the event is to create an opportunity to showcase the pride and spirit of neighborhoods and forge relationships that can help improve the quality of life for city residents going forward.
Neighborhood groups that wish to participate have until July 7 to register for Neighborhoods Day by going to the website, www.arisedetroit.org, or phoning, 313-921-1955.
Groups that register for $50 will receive custom made banners, T-shirts and other incentives.
As in the past, community groups, block clubs and churches will host neighborhood cleanups, help build new housing, host health fairs and free health screenings, parades anti-crime events, community service projects, youth concerts, school events and sign up volunteers for community programs.
For the first time, community groups and organizations planning similar events in the month of August — not just on Aug. 7 — can have their events also promoted and marketed as part of the Neighborhoods Day observance if they pay the registration fee.
“Neighborhoods Day gets people to step out of their circles all over the city, to become involved and get to know their neighbors again,” said city resident Linda Butler, an ARISE Detroit! volunteer.
“ARISE Detroit! is replacing what has been missing in Detroit.”
People can also register at www.arisedetroit.org to do volunteer work on Neighborhoods Day.
Neighborhood programs partnering with ARISE Detroit! to host events around the city include The Skillman Foundation’s Good Neighborhoods Initiative.
Major sponsors thus far include the Skillman and Kresge foundations, the Local Initiative Support Corporation (LISC), Comerica Bank and Waste Management of Michigan.

Funded by the Skillman and Kresge foundations, ARISE Detroit! is a coalition of more than 400 non-profits, churches, community groups and organizations. It recruits volunteers and markets events and programs on behalf of local community groups trying to improve the quality of life in Detroit.
