National Basketball League of Canada’s two-time champion Windsor Express pushing for Third Championship powered by Players, Head Coach, and Team Owner from Detroit

The Windsor Express, a Canadian professional basketball team of the National Basketball League of Canada (NBLC), is playing for its third Championship under head coach and native Detroiter Bill Jones, who played high school basketball at Southwestern.

After winning the first Finals Game 105 -104 on May 18th against the London Lightning in London Ontario Canada, the Express lost Game Two 124 – 107 on May 20. The tied series now shifts to Windsor for Game 3 on May 23 (7:00 p.m.) and Game 4 on May 25 (7:00 p.m.). If a Game 5 is needed to determine the best of five series, it will be played in London Ontario.

Both the Express’ Finals Home Games will be played at the WFCU Centre, located at 8787 McHugh St. in Windsor, Ontario. WFCU Centre is a 20-minute drive from the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel, not far from downtown Windsor. The Windsor Express has players with Detroit connections, including Latin Davis, who played college basketball at Wayne State University. Other players with Detroit ties are Justin Moss and PJ Reyes.

The Windsor Express is owned by native Detroiter Dartis Willis, Sr., who serves as the team’s president and CEO. The former “NBL Canada Executive of the Year” is the only African American who owns and operates a Canadian franchise of the National Basketball League of Canada. Willis’ team won NBL Championships in 2014 and 2015.

Willis, who grew up on Detroit’s east side, is an alum of Wayne State University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in public administration. He also holds an MBA from Lawrence Technological University.

“From downtown Detroit and driving through the tunnel, you can actually get to our home arena, WFCU Centre in Windsor, faster than you can get to many locations in Metro Detroit from downtown Detroit,” said Willis. “I want Metro Detroiters to come out and support this Detroit-led team steaming to capture our third championship. It’s going to be exciting!”

The National Basketball League of Canada is a professional men’s league organization headquartered in Toronto. NBLC was founded in 2011. Over the last several years, many American players are choosing to play international professional basketball with the National Basketball League of Canada, which is closer to the United States, versus playing in other more distant global destinations.
