Mosaic Youth Theatre of Detroit Presents 'Woodward Wonderland' at DIA

Mosaic Youth Theatre of Detroit will take audiences back into time to the J.L. Hudson’s 12th floor “Toyland” in Downtown Detroit for its seventh annual holiday production of Woodward Wonderland: A Detroit Holiday Tradition.  On stage at the Detroit Institute of Arts’ Detroit Film Theatre, Thursday, December 11 to Sunday, December 14, the original play brings Detroit holiday traditions to the stage, with scenes featuring Noel Night, the Thanksgiving Day Parade and ice skating in Campus Martius Park. Woodward Wonderland is presented by the DTE Foundation.
“This production is a true celebration of Detroit, bringing together professional caliber youth talent along with the legendary stories of the city’s past and today.” said Rick Sperling, Mosaic’s founder and artistic director, “Woodward Wonderland has become a holiday classic for Detroit families and those who hold a fondness for this beloved city.”
The play features a cast of more than 100 young artists who will not only act but sing Motown holiday classics alongside professional dancing reminiscent of that era.  As Mosaic is most known for its quality of work, the youth performers’ skills during this show will rival that of adult theatre professionals.
Woodward Wonderland allows the audience to live through the characters’ favorite holiday traditions. The production opens up with one character’s excitement about the Thanksgiving Day Parade and concludes with another’s favorite tradition, the Mosaic Holiday Perform-a-thon, where Mosaic performs at group and nursing homes during the holiday season. Woodward Wonderland includes 15 songs ranging from I’ll Be Home for Christmas to Pure Imagination, some of which are accompanied by dance numbers.
This production will move anyone who has experienced the holiday season in Detroit,” said Courtney Burkett, director of acting programs at Mosaic Youth Theatre. “Woodward Wonderland represents some of our most fond memories as Detroiters and presents the youth of this city in an incredible light as well. We are excited to bring the region together for this unforgettable holiday experience.”
