Michigan Science Center Takes Visitors “Above and Beyond” with New Aerospace Innovation Exhibit

Detroit’s Michigan Science Center (Mi-Sci) is set to launch an exciting and interactive aerospace innovation exhibit titled “Above and Beyond” on January 30. This 6,000-square-foot exhibition, presented locally by Aramco Americas, promises an immersive experience exploring transformative innovations in aviation and aerospace. From the first powered flights to the latest advancements on Earth and in space, visitors are in for an experience like no other.

“Above and Beyond” is not your typical science exhibition. It goes beyond traditional displays by offering an interactive demonstration of the evolution of aviation and aerospace. Visitors will embark on a journey through time, witnessing the progress from the early days of powered flights to cutting-edge innovations both on our planet and beyond.

The exhibit features a 6,000-square-foot space divided into five galleries, each housing dozens of interactive displays. Attendees can enter an immersive wraparound theater, providing a unique vantage point for exploring aerospace innovations. The experiences include riding to the edge of space in a simulated space elevator, testing a self-designed supersonic fighter jet in a virtual high-speed flying competition, and participating in a group flying experience that mimics the sensation of flying like a bird in a flock.

To enhance the experiential learning, “Above and Beyond” incorporates state-of-the-art technologies such as flight simulation, immersive theater, touch-table displays, and augmented reality. These technologies not only entertain but also provide a deeper understanding of the scientific concepts behind flight. Visitors can apply STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) skills while having fun exploring the future of aerospace.

“Above and Beyond” will push our guests to their limits and help them discover if they have the ‘right stuff,’” says Christian Greer, president and CEO of Mi-Sci. “This is one of our coolest traveling exhibitions to date, and guests won’t want to miss the opportunity to fly in formation like a bird or test pilot a totally new aircraft of their own design, all while applying STEM skills and having fun exploring the future of aerospace.”

The national sponsor for the tour is Boeing, marking the 100th anniversary of the aerospace giant. Boeing’s commitment to sparking interest in aerospace from an early age aligns with the exhibit’s goal of inspiring the next generation of scientists, engineers, pilots, and astronauts. The exhibition is a collaboration with NASA and the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum.

Locally, Aramco Americas plays a crucial role in presenting “Above and Beyond” at Mi-Sci. The collaboration reflects Aramco Americas’ commitment to supporting educational outreach in the community. By partnering with Mi-Sci, Aramco Americas aims to inspire and engage the community in the wonders of aerospace innovation.

“Sparking an interest in the wonder of aerospace at an early age is a priority for Boeing, and the ‘Above and Beyond’ exhibition provides future engineers, pilots or astronauts with an interactive glimpse into how they can achieve their dreams and inspires them to pursue careers in science and technology,” said Todd Citron, Ph.D., chief technology officer and vice president and general manager of Boeing Research & Technology.

With its focus on interactivity, innovation, and education, “Above and Beyond” at the Michigan Science Center promises to be a must-visit for science enthusiasts of all ages. The exhibit not only showcases the rich history of aerospace but also invites visitors to participate actively in the exploration of future possibilities. As Detroit welcomes this groundbreaking exhibit, it’s an exciting time for both the Michigan Science Center and the broader community eager to take their understanding of aerospace to new heights.

Admission to the exhibit is covered by Mi-Sci’s general admission tickets, which can be purchased at www.mi-sci.org. For additional details, you can also explore the exhibition’s dedicated website at AboveandBeyondExhibition.com.
