After Governor Gretchen Whitmer legalized sports betting and internet gaming in December 2019, Mary Kay Bean, spokeswoman for the Michigan Gaming Control Board is giving new information on the enactment.
“We are at a very early stage of this process,” Bean said. “The agency must establish several sets of administrative rules, which pass through many levels of review. The timing of implementation depends not only on our agency but also on decisions other departments, agencies and the Legislature make along the way. Our goal is to authorize onsite sports betting at the Detroit casinos this spring. Timing will depend on how quickly we receive applications, can approve the casinos’ internal controls and are able to issue required licenses.”
When legislation passes in 2021, Gov. Whitmer indicated that she has specific plans on where funds will go from sports betting and internet gaming. “My top priority in signing this legislation was protecting and investing in the School Aid Fund because our students deserve leaders who put their education first,” said Gov. Whitmer. “Thanks in part to the hard work and leadership of Senator Hertel and Representative Warren, these bills will put more dollars in Michigan classrooms and increase funding for firefighters battling cancer. This is a real bipartisan win for our state.”
