March for Black Women Detroit Returns for Their Third Year

On September 26th, 2020, March for Black Women Detroit will be
having their annual rally for the third year in a row. The rally begins at 1pm. The location
is Campau Park on 1561 Robert Bradby Dr. This year they have collaborated with local
organizations: Detroit Heals Detroit, Detroit Queer Activist Coalition, BAMN Revolution,
AMA, BLMIAC, Detroit Solidarity Movement, and WAAWIIYAATANONG Resurgence.
Sounds will be provided by the People’s Sound Detroit. Free yoga will be provided by
Mindful Movement Detroit, two hours before the rally begins.

March for Black Detroit was inspired by the original March for Black Women rallies that
took place in Washington D.C. and New York City, organized by the Black Women’s
Blueprint. The goal of March for Black Women Detroit is to center Black women and
educate the community on the issues they face. Black women and their issues are often
left out of Pro-Black and Feminist conversations. This organization creates a space for
Black women to be heard.

March for Black Women Detroit’s first demand is justice for Priscilla Slater. She was a
thirty-eight-year-old Black woman who was found dead in a holding cell in Harper
Woods on June 10th, 2020. There has been little media attention and outrage on her

death. This is just an example of how Black women have been excluded from the
conversation on police brutality. Their second demand is for Black people who are not
cishet Black men to be properly included in the Black Lives Matter movement. Properly
included as in acknowledging the issues that these identities face within and outside of
the Black community.

March for Black Women Detroit invites all Black marginalized identities and allies to
attend the rally on September 26th at Campau Park. The event begins at 1pm. PPE,
snacks, and water will be provided. Security and a first aid team will also be there to
keep the event safe and fun.
