The Temptations iconic Christmas album Give Love At Christmas features the song “Christmas Everyday”. Although July is perhaps too early to start blasting Christmas music, a local foundation is making an effort to spread the Christmas spirit year round. Saturday, July 25, The Potential Foundation is hosting its second annual Christmas In July community event.
Bayete Milhomme founded the nonprofit along with his siblings. He says the event is near to their hearts.
“We really wanted to focus on youth because that’s where our passions were. We wanted to improve the youth in low income areas, areas we grew up in,” said Milhomme.
Previously, The Potential Foundation partnered with the Boys & Girls Club to host a party-style Christmas in July featuring free haircuts, manicures, and a bike giveaway. Due to COVID-19, this year’s event will take on a different approach. It will be spread out over three locations and resemble a parade atmosphere with gifts and ice cream for the youth.
The festivities will kick off Saturday, July 25 at 11 a.m. at Ella Fitzgerald Park (16625 Prairie St, Detroit, MI 48221) in partnership with the U.S. Census Bureau. It will be the only static location of the day and families will be encouraged to visit the park to pick up presents and fill out their 2020 Census. They’ll then move, parade-style, to the E. Outer Drive and Dequindre area at 1:30 p.m. to pass out toys. The final neighborhood, W. 7 Mile and Telegraph, will receive their parade at 4 p.m.
Donations are still being accepted. People can bring gifts to the various Saturday locations, give via Cash App: $potentialfoundation, or donate directly to The Potential Foundation on their website https://www.thepotentialfoundation.com/donate.
Given how the first half of 2020 has played out, we all could benefit from some early Christmas cheer.
