Lions are coming off a successful draft year where they found talent in rounds other than the first. Third round pick Larry Warford was very productive and should continue to be for years to come. The Lions also had two productive undrafted free agents in LaAdrian Waddle and Joseph Fauria. New Lions coach Jim Caldwell will need to take advantage of his top ten pick if he hopes to be successful. Here are four potential options:
Sammy Watkins
His performance in the Orange Bowl has only helped his draft stock. He shredded Ohio State for 16 catches for 227 yards and two touchdowns. He finished the season with 101 receptions for 1464 yards and 12 touchdowns. Currently, Mel Kiper has him going to the Oakland Raiders at five but if he falls to ten he will defiantly be an option. He is an explosive receiver that seems to have a high ceiling. However, he was suspended for two games his sophomore year for possession of marijuana.
Mike Evans
The six foot five receiver out of Texas A&M could also fill the void that is opposite to Calvin Johnson. He finished the season with 69 catches for 1394 yards and 12 touchdowns. This would give the Lions another receiver that could go up and get the ball. His speed is a concern but he still has time to improve his 40 time.
Justin Gilbert
This six foot corner could be an answer for the Lions’ ailing secondary. He has the size and speed to compete with top receivers in the league. Last season, he had 42 total tackles and seven interceptions. He is also a talented kick returner. Over his four year career, he returned six kicks back for touchdowns. He did not return punts. Mel Kiper currently has him going to the Lions at 10 in his mock draft.
Darqueze Dennard
The Michigan State cornerback had an outstanding year becoming the first Spartan to win the Jim Thorpe Award. His ties to the state make him an interesting pick. Mel Kiper has called him the most complete corner in the draft but has him going 24th to the Bengals. If the Lions select Dennard they know they will be getting a competitor with a great work ethic. Let’s just hope that he isn’t another Charles Rodgers.
