ATLANTA — Rap legend Ice Cube was able to experience an extreme Hollywood rarity, perhaps even an unprecedented film-making feat: live vicariously through his son, O’Shea Jackson Jr., as his first-born played his father in the film, Straight Outta Compton, his father’s bandmates’ spectacular rise and precipitous fall from rap superstardom.
The city’s celebrity elite congregated at the Regal Theater at Atlantic Station for Universal’s highly-anticipated “Straight Outta Compton.” Ice Cube and his son were joined by the likes of singer Usher, rappers Ludacris, Da Brat, 2Chainz and David Banner, famed producer Will Packer, renowned director F. Gary Gray, Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed, Councilman Kwanza Hall and many others for the electric film that chronicles the meteoric rise of a revolutionary rap group that rose from the ashes of abject impoverishment in Compton, Calif. to change the face of hip hop and popular music forever.
The Universal Pictures film opens nationwide on Aug. 14.
