James E. Tate, Jr.

Council President, City of Detroit (MAN OF THE YEAR)

For more than 15 years, Detroit City Council President James E. Tate, Jr. has stood at the intersection of leadership, service, and community advocacy, helping guide Detroit through some of its most challenging and transformative moments. His commitment to the residents of Detroit, coupled with his integrity, accessibility, and vision for a stronger city, have earned him the distinction of being named the 2026 Michigan Chronicle Men of Excellence Man of the Year.

Tate’s journey is one deeply rooted in public service. A lifelong resident of Detroit’s District 1, he has never viewed elected office as a position of power, but rather as a platform to serve. Since first being elected to the Detroit City Council in 2010, Tate has become known as a leader who listens, engages, and remains accessible to the people he represents.

His tenure began during one of the most difficult periods in Detroit’s history. As the city faced financial crisis and eventual bankruptcy, Tate made difficult but necessary decisions, placing the long-term stability of Detroit above political convenience. He supported efforts to restructure city government, advocated for fiscal responsibility, and even voluntarily reduced his own salary as city employees faced cuts. Throughout the uncertainty, he never lost sight of the people behind the policies.

Today, as President of the Detroit City Council, Tate continues to lead with the same steady hand and principled approach. He has championed responsible economic development, supported affordable housing initiatives, and helped advance projects that create meaningful employment opportunities for Detroit residents. His leadership has played an important role in ensuring that Detroit’s resurgence benefits not only investors and developers, but the people who call the city home.

Tate has been a tireless advocate for equity and inclusion. He fought to ensure that Detroit residents had meaningful ownership opportunities within the cannabis industry, recognizing the importance of creating pathways to wealth in communities historically harmed by inequitable policies. His commitment to fairness has helped open doors for entrepreneurs who might otherwise have been left behind.

Through initiatives such as Protect Your Crown and his leadership on the Task Force on Black Male Engagement, he has elevated conversations around mental health, mentorship, and personal development, helping to create opportunities for future generations to thrive.

The Michigan Chronicle’s Men of Excellence Man of the Year Award recognizes individuals whose leadership creates lasting impact. James E. Tate, Jr. embodies that standard. He is a public servant who leads with humility, a visionary who values collaboration, and a champion who never forgets the people he serves. For these reasons and more, the Michigan Chronicle proudly recognizes Detroit City Council President James E. Tate, Jr. as its 2026 Men of Excellence Man of the Year.
