A number of Black stars won big at the 2023 Golden Globes.

On Tuesday (January 10), the 80th annual Golden Globes aired on NBC one year after the network declined to televise the 79th edition of the awards show following a Los Angeles Times report that revealed a lack of Black members in the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), the organization that puts on the event.

Host Jerrod Carmichael addressed the controversy as the awards made its television comeback at the Beverly Hilton.

HFPA “did not have a single Black member until George Floyd died. I’m here because I’m Black,” Carmichael quipped in his opening monologue.

Ahead of the awards, HFPA President Helen Hoehne said they had “listened to the criticism” and “transformed” the organization.

“This is really not the old HFPA anymore,” Hoehne said in a statement. “Over the past 18 months — almost two years now — we took a deep look inward and listened to the criticism. … And we built a new infrastructure that transformed our organization and the awards show into something that is more diverse, transparent, and responsive.”

Despite the past controversy, “Black girl magic” prevailed Tuesday night, as Niecy Nash said when she presented Abbott Elementary’s Quinta Brunson with the award for best actress in a TV comedy series.
