Hashtag Lunchbag Detroit returns for its 7th year of community service

The brown bags with a purpose are making a triumphant return for community service in Detroit. The 7th annual #Hashtag Lunchbag Detroit will take place on Dec. 29, 2019 at The Footlocker Detroit Community Store. The event will take place from 10 AM to 2 PM.

#Hashtag Lunchbag Detroit plans to feed over 1,000 people from the community. Community members, volunteers and more will gather to pack each brown bag with a sandwich, water, fruit and a note of affirmation. From there, lunches will be passed out to varied homeless populations in Detroit.

#Hashtag Lunchbag began in Los Angeles in 2012 through the Living Through Giving Foundation. Founder of #Hashtag Lunchbag Ajay Relan said that he started the movement with friends in his apartment. “#Hashtag Lunchbag began on Christmas 2012 in a Los Angeles apartment by a group of friends who were having trouble finding fun and meaningful ways to give back,” said Relan. “After a few failed attempts, we decided to take it upon ourselves and create our own experience.” What started on Christmas Day has extended to 22 cities in the U.S., including Canada and fed over 20,000 people. #Hashtag Lunchbag Detroit commenced in the summer of 2013 for the united premise of tackling homelessness and ending widespread hunger. Led by millennials, the Detroit chapter has fed over 5,000 people to date. Support has been shown from Detroit City Council, community sponsors, and national media publications. Nike is also a partner alongside Footlocker for the community event. For more information, including the volunteering process, please contact Brittni Brown or email info@hashtaglunchbagdetroit.org
