Haiti President Assassinated at His Home

Haitian President Jovenel Moise was killed early Wednesday morning after an attack at his private residence, according to the country’s acting Prime Minister Claude Joseph, who “declared a state of seige in the country,” CNN reported.

The attackers barged into Moise’s home at around 1 a.m. and killed the state leader, per the prime minister, who detailed that the assassination was a “heinous, inhumane and barbaric act.”
Haiti’s first lady, Martine Moise, was shot during the attack and was evacuated to a Miami hospital for medical treatment, said Haiti’s ambassador to the US., per the CNN article. Her medical condition is stable, though critical, Ambassador Bocchit Edmond said in a press briefing, according to the story.
The attackers are thought to be “mercenaries,” Edmond added, saying that they are “well-trained killers.”
He added in the article that a video showed the killers speaking Spanish and perpatrating themselves as Drug and Enforcement Administration (DEA) Agents.
“I believe they are fake DEA agents,” he said on Wednesday to reporters. “We don’t know how they came in.”
Moise’s death occurred during extreme violence in Haitian capital Port-au-Prince that has cost the lives of numerous citizens and grew out of control in June.
President Joe Biden said in a statement released by the White House: “We are shocked and saddened to hear of the horrific assassination … and the attack on First Lady Martine Moïse of Haiti. We condemn this heinous act, and I am sending my sincere wishes for First Lady Moïse’s recovery.”
