You can’t scroll down a Facebook feed without seeing tons of missing kids under the age of 21. Likes and re-posts are administered with the hopes that each child will return home safely. Whether familial pressures, bullying, violence or all the above, an average of 1.5 million children go missing every year. Additionally, 1 in 10 youth between the ages of 18 and 25 and 1 in 30 youth between the ages of 13 and 17 experience homelessness each year.
Greyhound and the National Runaway Safeline are continuing their efforts to help runaways get back home safely through the Home Free Program.
To qualify for the program, each runaway must:
- Call the NRS hotline at 1-800-RUNAWAY or 1-800-786-2929
- Be between the ages of 12 and 21
- Be named on a runaway report
- Be willing to reunite with their family
The same person can use the free ticket program twice. Greyhound will give a free ticket to a parent or guardian whose child is under 15 years of age. The Home Free program was established in 1995. The program aids runaway, homeless, and exploited youth to return home safely and or find a safe and stable place to stay where they can receive appropriate services. Since 1995, the program has helped over 16,000 runaways.
