Gloria Jean Horton, beloved wife of Detroit Tigers legend Willie Horton and the cherished matriarch of the Horton family, passed away on Saturday, August 29, following her battle with dementia. She was 85.
A lifelong Detroiter, Gloria’s story was deeply rooted in family, community, and the city she loved. She and Willie Horton first met as students at Northwestern High School in Detroit. Their relationship blossomed over the years, and the two eventually married, building a life together centered around family and service.
Together, Gloria and Willie raised seven children and were blessed with 21 grandchildren. Gloria was the heart and matriarch of the Horton family; a woman whose love, strength, compassion, and unwavering commitment to her family touched generations.
The daughter of Sam and Thelma Reid, Gloria carried with her a deep appreciation for family and community. She was passionate about Detroit and its sports teams, and she embraced opportunities to give back and support philanthropic causes. While her husband became a celebrated figure in Detroit sports history, Gloria was a quiet but powerful force behind the family, providing love, encouragement, stability, and support throughout their journey.
Those who knew Gloria will remember her not only as Willie Horton’s wife, but as a remarkable woman in her own right—a devoted mother, grandmother, wife, daughter, friend, and community-minded woman whose influence extended far beyond her immediate family.
Her family hopes that sharing Gloria’s story will honor the life she lived and the legacy she leaves behind. Her impact can be seen in the children and grandchildren she helped raise, the family she held together, and the countless lives touched by her generosity and spirit.
Gloria Jean Horton will be laid to rest on Saturday, Sept.12, at Greater Grace Temple, 23500 W. 7 Mile Road in Detroit.
The Horton family invites the Detroit community and all who knew and loved Gloria to join them in celebrating her life and legacy. Services are as follows: Family Hour 10-11a.m., Funeral 11a.m.
