Multiple sources are speculating former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick could be released from prison this week. Talk of his early release began circulating late Sunday night to the delight and suspicion of many Detroiters.
According to a Sunday night tweet posted by Ayanna Kilpatrick, sister of the former mayor, he will receive a compassionate release, due to the pandemic, from the Federal Bureau of Prisons.
“Due to suffering severe health challenges we expect Kwame Kilpatrick to receive a grant for COVID-19 compassionate release from the FBOP this week,” Ayanna Kilpatrick tweeted.
While there has been no official word from the Federal Bureau of Prisons announcing Kwame Kilpatrick’s release, the impending news of his release has quickly gained traction.
Sources are also reporting Peter Karmanos, co-founder and former CEO and Chairman of Compuware has petitioned Kilpatrick’s pardon to President Trump. The billionaire and friend to the ex-mayor have long petitioned for the release of Kilpatrick. Earlier this year, Karmanos wrote a letter to President Donald Trump requesting Kilpatrick’s freedom under the president’s clemency. No official response has since been reported.
News of Kilpatrick’s early pardon first began in May when State Representative Karen Whitsett stated Kilpatrick would be released. Later proving to be false, many are now hesitant to believe the former mayor will be released this week.
Serving as Mayor of Detroit from 2001 until 2008, Kilpatrick is currently serving a 28-year sentence for corruption and racketeering while in office at the Federal Correctional Institution in Oakdale, Louisiana. Sentenced in 2013, the ex-mayor has served just seven years of his total sentence. His current release date is set at January 18, 2037.
